Fighting Eczema is Tough, but we can do it!

For the past two years, I have tried many products to prevent my eczema from flaring up. I knew many friends that also have eczema, and I understand how tough this path is to fight eczema. After two years of trying and failing, I wanted to share some of my experiences, tips, and recommendations with you all.

Please note that this is purely based on personal experience, so it is best to go see a dermatologist for a professional opinion.

It is important to stay hydrated and moisturized at all times. So choosing suitable skincare products are important. I prefer using products with natural ingredients, especially alcohol-free. Chemical and alcohol in the products may dehydrate and further flare up the skin. I have a combination skin type, and here is a simple daily routine that can keep my skin moisturized.

Makeup Remover

FANCL / Mild Cleansing Oil / USD 30 (120mL)

Highlights: mild, but best for water-resistance makeup products

FANCL / Facial Washing Powder / USD 21 (50g)

I have used FANCL the brand for many years already, and the makeup remover and washing powder are my favorite products of all. Although I rarely do makeup, makeup remover is important in the summer after applying sunscreen. It is mild, but perfect for any water-resistance makeup product. After using it, I then use the washing powder to give a thorough cleanse.

Washing powder might be something new for many of you, but it is simple to use just like any other cleansers out there. As I have combination skin, I prefer washing my face thoroughly and remove any excess oil. This washing powder is preservative-free, so one bottle can only last you a maximum of one month. I usually buy a large batch from Hong Kong as it is usually cheaper, but you can also purchase it online on its US website.

Highlights: preservative-free, can remove all excess oil on the skin

How to Use: Take a teaspoon amount into the palm of your hand and lather well. Gently massage onto the face in a circular motion. Rinse clean with lukewarm water and follow with any of our lotions.

Where to Buy: local FANCL stores in Hong Kong, or online store on US website

FRESH / Rose Deep Hydration Facial Toner / $54 (250mL)

For the toner, Fresh is an excellent choice. In the summer, I prefer the Rose Floral Toner because it is lighter. For the winter in Vancouver, the deep hydration version is needed. Rose Deep Hydration Facial Toner is a new product that launched in recent years, and I just fell in love with it. It works for all skin types, and my friends love it after recommending it to them. It is made with rose fruit extract, rose water, rose flower oil, and real rose petals, which can soothe, nourish, and hydrate your skin.

Highlights: perfect toner for dry skin, alcohol-free

Tip from Me: pour the toner directly on your palm and pat it on the skin, instead of using the cotton pads

Where to Buy: Sephora, The Bay

Face Cream

CLARINS / Hydra-Essentiel Silky Cream / $47 (50mL)

You may think that why I use different brands for my daily routine; mainly is because some products in other brands may not be able to provide the same hydration as others. In order to choose the most suitable products for hydration, while keeping my face from oiliness, I tried many brands to create my daily routine.

Clarins’s Hydra-Essentiel product line plays an important role in my routine. And this silky cream helps me to pass through cold and dry winters. It comes in three types for different skin types: Cooling Gel (for normal to combination skin), Silky Cream (for normal to dry skin), and Rich Cream (very dry skin). I tried the rich cream, but it was too rich for my skin and caused excess oil. So I usually stick with silky cream in the winter and cooling gel in the summer. For people who have very dry skin or live in countries with severe winters, the rich cream is highly recommended.

Highlights: comes in three cream textures for different skin types, great for moisturizing

Tip from Me: put a thicker layer before sleep once in a while to act as a sleeping mask. Sometimes, Clarins online store offers gift sets that include a full-size cream and additional gifts at the same price.

Where to Buy: Online store on, The Bay, Sephora, Shoppers Drug Mart

BIODERMA / Hydrabio Moisturizing Serum / $34.90 (40mL)

Bioderma offers an inexpensive serum for deep hydration. The brand is known for skincare for sensitive skin. And I found it is perfect for eczema, especially batches on the face while keeping it from getting itchy and oily.

Highlights: deep hydration, allergen-free fragrance, perfect for sensitive skin

FRESH / Vitamin Nectar Glow Juice Antioxidant Face Serum / $37 (15mL) or $89 for 3 bottles

This is my go-to serum in the winter. It is a juice serum with over 480,000 nutrient-rich microbubbles, delivering an essential dose of skin nutrition for an energized, healthy look. The microbubbles contain coconut oil, vitamins C and E, and beta-carotene blend with the watery base of fruit extracts and minerals. I found the product can be easily absorbed, and it is like hydrating protection for my skin.

Highlights: absorbs quickly, antioxidant protection, 24-hour hydration

Where to Buy: Sephora, Nordstrom (has a 3-bottle set deal)

Body Lotion

BIODERMA / Atoderm Cream / $19.90 (500mL)

If you are seeking the perfect body lotion for eczema, this is the one! I used bottles after bottles for the past years, especially winters. It can keep dry or atopic skin for 24 hours. I used to have a rash and batches of eczema on my back, after applying it daily for the past year, my eczema on my back is gone entirely! So don’t be lazy and apply it before bed.

Highlights: fragrance-free, can be used on all body parts, suitable for all ages

Tip from Me: Use it before bed, if you don’t like the sticky feeling. Check regularly in Shoppers Drug Mart store to seek discounts. The sale price can get down to ~$16 and stock them up! If sold out, ask for a rain check. You will need many bottles to pass through the winter.

Creams for Severe Eczema

My neck tends to have a more serious eczema problem compared to other body parts. So I recently collaborated with Eczema Honey Co. to try out this healing cream. The results are amazing. I apply it daily for a month, the patches on my neck are almost gone. It is preservative-free, so they recommend putting the cream in the fridge. It also adds a soothing and cooling effect, so it feels good when applying to the skin. I use it more for specific spots with severe eczema, but it is good for all body parts. Ingredients including organic beeswax, pure honey, almond oil, and sunflower oil can reduce flare-ups and redness.  If you are allergic to nuts, they also offer a nut-free version.

ECZEMA HONEY CO. / Original Natural Healing Cream / USD 29.95 (113 g)

Highlights: preservative-free, with a nut-free option, suitable for all ages

Tip from Me: Use it before bed, if you don’t like the sticky feeling.

As individual eczema for the past two years, I can feel how tough it is to fight and control eczema. I really hope this list can help some of you out there, who are still looking for suitable skincare products. It is also a good time to review your daily routine to get rid of any products with alcohol or chemical in them. And drink more water!

In addition, your daily diet is another noteworthy component in fighting eczema. In my next post, I will talk about my change in eating habits for the past years.
